STORRS, Conn. - The Huskies scored three goals in the first 10:02 and never looked back as the No. 5 University of Connecticut field hockey team crushed Yale, 7-1, on Wednesday evening at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex in Storrs, Conn. With the win, the Huskies improve to 9-2 on the season while the Bulldogs slip to 6-4.
The Huskies seized control of this one early, scoring two goals in the first 7:46. Freshman standout Marie Elena Bolles got things started when she punched one in at the 6:07 mark. Classmate Anne Jeute got ahead of the Yale defense and raced into the circle. Bolles was running along side her and Jeute crossed it to Bolles, who redirected it into the back of the net.
Jeute added her sixth goal of the season just 21-seconds later. UConn was awarded one of its five first-half penalty corners but the play broke down. The Huskies were able to improvise their way to a 2-0 edge when Rayell Heistand hit the ball towards the net from the top of the circle and Jeute was able to get a stick on it tipped a high shot over Emily Cain.
Heistand gave the Huskies a nearly insurmountable 3-0 lead when she converted on a penalty stroke at the 10:02 mark and Cara Silverman's seventh score of the season at the 26:54 mark gave UConn some extra padding. Silverman took a feed from Robin Kleine and drilled it into the back of the net from deep in the circle.
The Huskies absolutely dominated the Bulldogs in the first stanza, out-shooting Yale by a 15-0 margin while holding a 9-0 edge in shots on goal.
The Bulldogs would get on the board when Erin Carter converted on a penalty stroke at the 47:44 mark.
Ali Blankmeyer kept the pedal to the metal when she added back-to-back scores at 60:25 and 65:40 and Silverman put some icing on the cake when she scored UConn's seventh goal with only 39-seconds remaining.
Sarah Mansfield was forced to make only one save in 60:24 of action. She was relieved by Allison Karpiak for the final 9:36.
Emily Cain and Katie Boling split time in net for Yale and combined for seven saves.
The Huskies ended up out-shooting Yale by a lopsided 25-2 margin and held an 11-0 advantage in penalty corners
UConn is back in action on Saturday, October 9 when the team welcomes Georgetown to Storrs. Game time is set for 12 p.m. at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex.
