NEW HAVEN, Conn. - In their first meet of the 2010 indoor season, the University of Connecticut men's track and field team participated in the Yale Invitational taking home two individual and a relay title.
The meet was primarily used to assess the team after their return from winter break and to the delight of head coach Greg Roy, the throwing squad met and exceeded his expectations.
"The throws were the high point of our meet as we won both events and went one-two in the 35 lb. weight throw," said Coach Roy.
The weight throw was UConn's strongest event of the day as junior Pat Sampson and freshman Josh Faboyede finished one-two each earning tossing NEICAAA qualifying throws. Sampson finished with a throw of 17.15 meters while Faboyede tossed his weight 16.84 meters.
In the shot put, Mike Alleman won the event with a New England qualifying throw of 16.34 meters. Also participating in the shot put were multi-eventers sophomores Ben Waruch (fifth place, 13.18m), Kyle Rowbotham (ninth place, 12.58m), Jake Waruch (12th place 12.18m) and freshman Sam Smith (14th place, 11.55m).
UConn's other title of the day came in the distance medley. The relay team of Tim Bennatan, captain Steven Rochester, Dan Holst and Scott Johnson flew through the race finishing with a time of 10:06.13. The Huskies came in second in the 4x400 meter race coming across the line just .39 seconds behind Albany in 3:18.41. Senior captain Anthony Burris, Eric Fontanez, Rochester and Tyler Hopson each ran a leg for the Huskies in the race.
UConn's final relay event was the 4x800m race where the Huskies finished in third place with a time of 7:49.85. Participating in the event for the Huskies were Holst, Bennatan, Lucas Clyne and Johnson.
Freshman Greg Hoffman finished tied for second in the pole vault with a height of 4.50 meters, qualifying himself for the New England Championships.
The Huskies are back in action next weekend when they look to capture their fifth-straight title at the Sorlein Invitational in North Kingston, R.I. on Saturday January 16.
