NORTH KINGSTON, R.I. - For the fifth-straight year, the University of Connecticut men's track and field team took first place at the URI Sorlein Invitational. The Huskies came home with 12 titles on the day, two of the relay kind and 10 individual also ending with five one-two finishes and 24 Huskies coming in the top-3 in their respective events.
"This was a very good meet for the team," said head coach Greg Roy. "We performed well and showed a lot of improvement from last week. Over 50 percent of the Husky competitors were freshman and 80 percent of the team was made up of freshman and sophomores, so for our team to dominate the way they did is good news for us."
UConn had one-two finishes in five of their events. On the track, captain Anthony Burris and Eric Fontanez crossed the line one after the other in the 500 meter run with times of 1:05.35 and 1:05.46 respectively. Freshmen Artem Skobrev and Michael DaPice were one-two in the mile run with times of 4:19.70 and 4:20.47 and the Huskies earned the top-three spots in the 800-meter run as Tim Bennetan, Lucas Clyne and Chris Tomori finished with times of 1:56.46, 1:58.29 and 1:59.26 respectively.
On the field side of things, Jamaal Smith and Tyrone Faverey took first and second place in the triple jump with launches of 14.61m and 14.13m respectively. For the second week in a row, Patrick Sampson and Josh Faboyede earned first and second place finishes in the weight throw. Sampson finished with a toss of 17.39m while Faboyede finished right behind him with a throw of 17.35m.
Also earning first place finishes were both of the sprinters, Kevin Steinberg and Chris Whyte. Steinberg won the 55m dash with a time of 6.47 seconds while Whyte took the 55m hurdles, crossing the line with a time of 7.86 seconds. Alex Bennetan won the 1000 meter run for the Huskies finishing with a time of 2:31.31.
The Huskies won both of the relay events on the day crossing the line first in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:21.88 and in the 4x800 meter relay with a finish of 8:02.13.
UConn won the high jump for the second year in a row, this time as Eric Fontanez took first with a height of 2.09m. In the shot put, Mike Alleman took first for the second week in a row, this time with a throw of 16.56m.
"It was huge for our team to win this meet," continued Roy, "we started the day off down 30 points and to come back and win by 50 is spectacular. We need to bring this momentum into next week."
Catch the Huskies back in action next weekend in Cambridge, Mass. when they participate in the Harvard Quad on Saturday, January 23.
