PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Behind the goals of senior Jessica Diakun (Glastonbury, Conn.) and junior Erin Clark (Somers, Conn.) the University of Connecticut women's soccer team earned their 16th straight victory over Providence, Friday.
This is the 22nd time that Huskies have shut out the Friars. Providence has not scored a goal against UConn since 2004 and has only scored six goals in the 28 matches between the two teams.
With the win, the Huskies extend their win streak to five and earn their first BIG EAST win of the season (5-2-0, 1-0-0 BIG EAST). Providence falls to 4-3-1 and 0-1-0 in the BIG EAST.
The Huskies got on the board first, for the sixth-straight game, when Diakun headed in her first goal of the season in the 16th minute. Senior Brittany Taylor started the play off with a pass into the box that bounced high and was knocked in by Diakun to give the Huskies an early 1-0 lead.
Before the end of the first half, UConn would add another goal to the scoreboard. This time, freshman Georgina Giddings (Feltham, England) sent a cross from the left side that Clark headed into the goal to boost the Husky lead to two. This is the second-straight game that Clark has recorded a goal and the second-straight game where Giddings has tallied at least one point.
The shot total was about even in the first half between the two teams, but Providence piled on the shots in the second half outshooting Huskies 19-11. UConn only had four shots on goal during the game, scoring goals on two of them.
Sophomore Jess Dulski (Pittsford, N.Y.) recorded seven saves in the game, making five in the second half. The shutout was her second of season and second of her career.
The Huskies are back in action in their final non-conference game of the season against Yale on Sunday, September 20 at 2:00 p.m. at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium.
