SMITHFIELD, R.I. - A two-run sixth inning put the University of Connecticut softball team past Bryant University, Tuesday. Junior Justyne Roy (North Dighton, Mass.) acted as the game hero hitting in the game-tying run and scoring the game winner for the Huskies.
With the win, UConn improved their record to 21-11 and continued on their now seven-game win streak. Bryant dropped to 8-25.
Bryant was the first team to get on the board when Ali Chouinard hit a lead-off homerun putting the Bulldogs on top early. After giving up the homer, junior Tricia Sullivan (New Bedford, Mass.) buckled down allowing just three more hits scattered throughout the game. Sullivan also struck out nine Bulldogs, her ninth time this season that she has struck out more than five batters in a game.
Though UConn had nine hits, including a 3-for-3 effort by senior Micah Truax (South Glens Falls, N.Y.), they were unable to put anything together until the sixth. With one out, senior Sarah Neuschwander (Chugiak, Alaska) singled to centerfield to start things off. She was then replaced at first by freshman pinch runner Ali Adelman (San Diego, Calif.).
Adelman came home just one batter later when Roy doubled to right centerfield advancing to third on the throw to the plate. With senior Meghan Tierney (Salem, Conn.) at the plate, the Huskies tried to pull a bunt-and-run but Tierney missed causing the second out of the game. Roy was heading home on the play and got caught in a run-down but escaped when Bryant's catcher Ashley Coon dropped the ball giving up the go-ahead run.
UConn's defense shut down Bryant in the bottoms of the sixth and seventh to earn the victory.
The Huskies will return to the field when they take on Rutgers at 2:30 this Thursday, April 9, 2009 at the Burrill Family Field at the UConn Softball Complex. The doubleheader was originally scheduled for Friday, but got moved up due to impending rain.
