STORRS, Conn. - Solo home runs by the University of Connecticut in the fifth and sixth innings were the deciding factor in game two against Rutgers Thursday. UConn swept the Scarlet Knights in the doubleheader eking out a win in game one, 6-5 and shutting Rutgers out in game two, 2-0.
With the win, UConn (23-11, 7-5 BIG EAST) extended their win-streak to 10, their longest win streak of the season. Rutgers fell to 14-24, 3-11 BIG EAST.
The game moved quickly as neither team had many opportunities to score through the first four and a half innings, but in the bottom of the fifth, senior Danielle Del Ponte (Tewksbury, Mass.) ripped a monster shot to dead centerfield putting the Huskies up by one.
In the next inning, after a shot by sophomore Julianne Towers (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) nearly went yard, senior Micah Truax (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) blasted a laser shot just over the left field wall extending the UConn lead to two.
That was all that the Huskies would need as they sat down the side in the top of the seventh to earn the victory.
Senior Rachael Crossin, (Fairless Hills, Pa.) who came in at the end of game one to earn her first save of the season, pitched a gem for UConn to help them earn their 23rd victory of the year. Over six innings, Crossin only allowed five base runners on four hits and a walk and sat down eight to add to her season strikeout total of 83 in just 72.0 innings of work.
The Huskies are back in action this weekend in a doubleheader against Notre Dame.
