STORRS, Conn. - On Sunday, April 26, the University of Connecticut baseball and softball teams will be hosting their annual "Strike Out Cancer" day. During the softball doubleheader against Villanova and the baseball game against St. John's, the Huskies will be hosting a silent auction to raise money for the V Foundation for Cancer Research.
Last year, both teams collected $1,850 from the silent auction and individual donations.
Items will be auctioned off during the first softball game from Noon until approximately 2:00 p.m. Items include tickets to the New Britain Rock Cats, the Connecticut Defenders, Six Flags and the Mystic Aquarium. UConn apparel and autographed items have also been donated by the golf, women's basketball, baseball and football teams. Also donated is a dinner for two to Mohegan Sun, NY Jets gear and an autographed Tony Gwynn baseball and photograph.
The V Foundation started with the dream of Jim Valvano, the passionate and committed former NC State basketball coach and award-winning broadcaster, as he battled cancer. It has been just 15 years since The V Foundation for Cancer Research was founded by ESPN and Jim Valvano. And what significant work has been accomplished during that time! Since 1993, The V Foundation has raised more than $80 million and awarded cancer research grants in 38 states and the District of Columbia. Researchers have developed their laboratories and taken their science from the labs to the clinics with the help of funds raised by The V Foundation.
