WASHINGTON, D.C. - The University of Connecticut softball team fell in extra innings to Georgetown in both games of the BIG EAST doubleheader. The Huskies, who were coming off of two losses to Louisville, are currently on a four-game losing streak, their longest of the season.
UConn's record now stands at 25-16, 7-10 BIG EAST while Georgetown improved their record to 13-25, 6-10 BIG EAST.
This is the first time this season that UConn has gone into extra innings in each game of a doubleheader. They have played seven extra inning games this season coming out victorious four times.
Game one took the Huskies to eight innings in their 1-0 loss. Neither team got on the board during the first seven with both teams only managing three hits each through the first seven innings. A lead-off walk by Demetria Cipriano started things off for the Hoyas. Jadig Garcia came in as a pinch runner and scored just one batter later on a double to the gap in left field by Kristi Preuss to take the victory.
In game two, the Huskies played in their longest game of the season, an 11 inning 3-2 loss.
UConn fell behind 1-0 in the first and were behind 2-0 after three complete innings. But in the fifth, the Huskies got on the board for the first time this weekend thanks to three infield singles. Freshman Jen Ward (Waterford, Conn.) got on base with her second single of the game. She moved up to second on a single to third by sophomore Julianne Towers (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) and to third on a single to second by senior Micah Truax (South Glens Falls, N.Y.). Ward crossed the plate during the next at bat on a wild pitch.
In the sixth, freshman Amy DeLuca (Bordentown, N.J.) led off the inning with a double down the leftfield line. Senior Meghan Tierney (Salem, Conn.) came in to pinch run and advanced to third via a sacrifice bunt by junior Justyne Roy (North Dighton, Mass.). Sophomore Jess Arremony's (Griswold, Conn.) sacrifice bunt would bring in the game tying run and push the game into extra innings.
Neither team got on board until the bottom of the 11th, when a single to the leftfield brought in the game-winner for the second straight game.
Senior Rachael Crossin (Fairless Hills, Pa.) pitched every inning of the two games for the Huskies, throwing 7.1 innings in game one and 10.2 innings in game two. Despite the two losses, the senior righthander struck out 23 Hoyas by way of the k including a season high 15 in game two of the doubleheader.
The Huskies are back in action on Wednesday, April 22 at 4:00 at home against Quinnipiac in non-conference action.
