WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The University of Connecticut baseball team dropped its first game of the RussMatt Invitational 4-3 against in-state rival Sacred Heart on Sunday morning in Winter Haven, Fla.
Matt Burnett (Endicott, N.Y.) led UConn with his second homerun of the season as the Huskies fall to 3-4 on the year with the loss to Sacred Heart. Burnett, who has recorded a team second-best 11 hits, has posted six RBIs on the season.
The redshirt-junior's blast came with one out in the first inning, tying the ballgame at an early 1-1 start.
In the third inning, Sacred Heart connected on two runs on a two-run homer to put the Pioneers up 3-1. But UConn answered in the bottom of the inning as three hits, including two doubles, tied the contest once again. Pierre LePage (Wolcott, Conn.) led off the inning with a single before advancing to third on an Elliot Glynn (Long Beach, Calif.) double.
After the Pioneers pitching staff gave up a walk to sophomore Mike Olt (Branford, Conn.), junior Peter Fatse (Hampden, Mass.) connected for his fifth double of the season to score LePage and Glynn to tie the game at three.
But in the end, the Pioneers used back-to-back singles and two wild pitches to score the game winning run in the top of the ninth inning.
Glynn finished the morning with three hits, adding his second double of the year as Fatse went 2-for-4 with a double, a stolen base and two RBIs.
Greg Nappo (Madison, Conn.) started the ballgame and pitched six innings for the Huskies. Dusty Odenbach (Rochester, N.Y.) came in for relief and threw for two innings as Dan Mahoney (Boston, Mass.) took the loss as Sacred Heart won the game in the ninth as the sophomore falls to 0-1 on the year.
UConn will face Miami (Ohio) on Monday in a noon match-up for its second game of the RussMatt Invitational. Box scores and overall statistics will be updated as soon as possible.
