STORRS, Conn. - In just its second shootout in program history, the University of Connecticut women's ice hockey team (18-8-3, 10-6-1) lost to Boston University 3-2 at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum on Friday night.
The Terriers' Caroline Bourdeau scored in the seventh-round of the shootout helping Boston University to remain undefeated in shootouts this season. Brittany Wilson (Nepean, Ont./Ottawa Inter. AA) made 30 saves in the game and stopped three BU shootout attempts.
UConn trailed by a pair of goals at the second intermission. Their penalty killing kept the Huskies in the game, denying BU a power-play goal until 8:54 when Jillian Kirchner capitalized on a 5-on-3 situation. Sarah Appleton and Sarah Russell had the assists on the Terrier (13-10-6, 11-6-0) goal that put the visitors ahead, 2-0.
Erin Seman scored for BU at 8:15 in the first period to give the Terriers up 1-0. Melissa Anderson and Sarah Russell with the helpers on Seman's 10th of the season.
Michelle Binning (Oshawa, Ont./Toronto Jr. Aeros Inter. AA) saw her shot caught by Melissa Haber in the waning minutes of the second period as the Huskies had several solid scoring opportunities as the period progressed.
Less than five minutes into the final period of regulation, the Huskies found themselves on the power play. Sami Evelyn (Nepean, Ont./Ottawa NCCP Inter. AA) intended on dumping the puck in to the offensive zone. The puck bobbled along and went right over Haber's glove to bring UConn within one-goal (2-1).
Binning collected a Monique Weber (Rogers, Minn./Elk Rivers High) rebound and tied the game 2-2 with less than half of the third period left to play. Haber later collected Evelyn's shot to deny the freshmen defender the gamewinner.
Wilson made the save with her right shoulder on Holly Lorms before garnering control of the puck as the Terriers crowded in front of the net searching for the win. The clock wound down and Binning's game-tying goal would stand, forcing the Huskies into their second-straight overtime game of the season.
UConn narrowly outshot Boston University (5-4), but the Huskies forced Haber to make several spectacular glove saves as they pressured the Terrier goalie. The clock once again expired with the game tied and Boston University entered its third shootout of the season.
The Huskies made three of their six attempts in the shootout and the Terriers escaped with the Hockey East win after Bourdeau beat Wilson in the final round.
The regular-season series against BU concludes on Saturday with a 3 p.m. face-off at Walter Arena. Fans will be able to follow the action via GameTracker on UConnHuskies.com.
