STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut women's ice hockey team's November slate ends with the Nutmeg Classic on Friday and Saturday. For the first time since 2007, the Huskies open the tournament against the Bobcats with a 7 p.m. face-off on Friday at Yale's Ingalls Rink. This is the first time that the Bulldogs host since the Nutmeg Classic has had a single host in 2007. Prior to that season, games were held at the various participant's rinks.
The Huskies look to snap a two-game losing streak while extending their all-time winning streak in the Nutmeg Classic. Entering this weekend's competition, UConn has won the last four-consecutive games in the tournament en route to a pair of Nutmeg Classic titles in 2008 and 2009.
Despite out-shooting the opposition in each of the last four games, including both games against Boston College over a week ago, UConn has not been able to score since their 7-2 victory over Maine (Nov. 8).
UConn is led in scoring by freshman Elisabeth Stathopulos (Toronto, Ont.) and senior Cristin Allen (Toronto, Ont.) who have both recorded nine points. Stathopulos has contributed four goals and five assists thus far in her rookie campaign while Allen has a team-best nine assists. Senior Michelle Binning (Oshawa, Ont.) is also among the team's scoring leaders with eight points, pacing the Huskies with five goals.
Quinnipiac (6-4-4, 4-1-3) has gone to overtime in its last two games with ties against Colgate (Nov. 20) and Cornell (Nov. 21). The Bobcats have won conference games at Yale (Nov. 7) and at Dartmouth (Nov. 14) both by a score of 2-1. Heather Hughes leads Quinnipiac with 11 points this season, including a team-best seven goals and four assists. Between the pipes, Victoria Vigilanti has seen a majority of the playing time (778:05) with a 1.62 goals-against average (GAA) and a .939 save-percentage.
For the Huskies (5-5-3, 1-3-3-0), sophomore Alexandra Garcia (Pointe-Claire, Que.) has been a consistent presence in the crease with a 2.15 GAA after posting her first career shutout over the Eagles (Nov. 14). She has a .903 save percentage after starting in 10 games this season.
Depending on the outcome of the 4 p.m. game between Sacred Heart and Yale on Friday, the Huskies will take on either of the two in the consolation (4 p.m.) or championship (7 pm.) game on Nov. 28.
