Baseball Announces Captains for 2010 Season

STORRS, Conn. - University of Connecticut baseball head coach Jim Penders has announced that seniors Matt Burnett and Trent DeLazzer, along with juniors Elliot Glynn and Mike Olt, will serve as the Huskies' captains for the 2010 season as voted on by the entire team.
"I am looking forward to seeing how the four captains embrace the responsibilities that come with being voted into leadership positions by their teammates," said Penders. "Matt, Trent, Elliot and Mike all have skills that will be needed in order to continue progress toward our goals in 2010."
Matt Burnett, who after redshirting the 2008 season bounced back in 2009, batting .311 on the year in 59 games played. As a redshirt junior, Burnett recorded 70 hits, 45 runs scored and 49 RBI with three home runs.
As one of UConn's most consistent hurlers, senior right-handed pitcher Trent DeLazzer will lead the ballclub from the mound this season. DeLazzer made eight appearances in 2009 with one start, earning a 1-0 record a 3.86 ERA. In 14 innings of work, he allowed 14 hits, six earned runs and just three walks. He also struck out 10 batters.
Heading into his junior season, Elliot Glynn has been a solid performer for the Huskies the past two seasons. In 2009, Glynn led the Huskies in postseason play in a 6-1 upset over West Virginia. Glynn threw 104 pitches in 7.1 innings as he allowed just one earned run and seven hits. He allowed only one extra base hit, while striking out seven on the night without giving up a walk. Glynn finished the 2009 season with a 4.76 ERA in 13 appearances and 12 starts. With an overall record of 5-4, he struck out a team-high 58 batters and allowed 39 earned runs in 73.2 innings of work.
Mike Olt, who was stricken with an injury in the middle of the 2009 season, finished the year with solid play at third base for the Huskies. In 2008 he led the program with 61 RBIs, a new single-season UConn record, while hitting 13 home runs as he was named a 2008 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball. As a sophomore in 2009, Olt batted .301 with 44 hits, 33 runs scored, 40 RBI and eight home runs in 38 games played.
UConn will begin its season on Feb. 26 against Northwestern as part of the BIG EAST/Big Ten Baseball Challenge. The Huskies' first game of the season will be played at 10:00 a.m. at Jack Russell Stadium in Clearwater, Fla.
