CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. (May 13, 2008) — A four-run seventh inning by the Eagles helped Boston College defeat the University of Connecticut baseball team 11-9 on Tuesday afternoon. The Huskies fall to 24-28 on the year after today's non-conference loss.
Freshman Elliot Glynn (Los Alamitos, Calif.) started things off in the afternoon's ballgame as he recorded his 12 double of the season down the left field line to get into scoring position early for the Huskies. Fellow classmate Mike Olt (Branford, Conn.) continued where he left off a day before, as he sent a two-out shot into the right center gap to score Glynn to put the Huskies up 1-0 with his team-leading 14th double of the season. Olt was able to score as freshman Mike Nemeth (Washington N.J.) singled to Boston College shortstop, Garret Smith.
Sophomore Peter Fatse (Hampden, Mass.) added to the UConn tally and put the Huskies up 3-0 in the top of the second as he led off the inning by earning a walk and followed by stealing his 16th stolen base in 16 attempts on the year. Fatse scored the Huskies' third run as freshman Pierre LePage (Wolcott, Conn.) got on base due to a fielding error by Smith.
But Boston College tallied two runs in the bottom of the inning to get back into the ball game, pulling to within one run. Freshman starting pitcher for UConn Ryan Mikalsen (Farmingville, N.Y.) gave up three hits and two runs in the inning, as he allowed three straight hits to the Eagles' offense.
The Huskies picked up two more runs on one hit, one walk and one error to take a 5-2 lead before Boston College got two runs back as a walk followed by back-to-back hits pulled the Eagles to within one. UConn put together a strong inning in the fourth, scoring three runs to make the score 8-4. Mike Olt, LePage and Nemeth each added another hit, while Boston College's fielding errors continued to pile up. The Huskies gave up another run to the Eagles, making the score 8-5, in the bottom of the fourth inning as Glynn took over on the mound for Mikalsen. Glynn walked the first two batters he faced before allowing Boston College's Tony Sanchez to reach base a strike three wild pitch. A double by Eric Campbell to right center scored Barry Butera to put the Eagles down just three.
Mikalsen left the game after three innings pitched as he gave up six hits and four runs, while striking out one batter. Boston College scored two more runs in the sixth inning and four in the seventh to take an 11-8 lead over the Huskies. A single followed by a triple by the Eagles helped spark the rally in the sixth before the Eagles scored four runs in the seventh on just one hit.
In the eighth the Huskies put one run on the board to get within two at 11-9 as LePage led off the inning with a double to left center. He later scored on a ground out to first by Mike Olt.
Dennis Accomando (Monroe, Conn.) took the loss to drop to an even 1-1 overall record on the year. He pitched just 0.2 innings while walking two and allowing three runs. The Eagles' Nick Asselin earned the win to improve to 2-1 overall.
Nemeth finished the game with a 3-for-5 performance as he recorded two RBIs and one run scored. Mike Olt added two hits and three RBIs, while LePage finished the night with two hits and two runs scored.
The Huskies will return to action Thursday as they travel to Pittsburgh, Pa. to take on the Panthers in their last regular season games of 2008. Thursday night's game is set to start at 6:00 p.m.
