UConn Volleyball Falls in Five at Middle Tennessee

MUFREESBORO, Tenn. (Nov. 29, 2008) – Rebecca Murray (Carmel, Ind.) and Chauntay Mickens (Germantown, Md.) led the University of Connecticut women’s volleyball team for the second-straight night in kills. The Huskies lost 3-2 at Middle Tennessee State despite double-digit kill efforts from Murray and Mickens.
Murray recorded 14 kills with a team-best hitting-percentage of .476 while Mickens had 13 kills on the night. UConn earned wins in the second and third sets of the match after dropping the first 25-19.
In the second set, Middle Tennessee closed in with a late three-point run (23-21) before UConn called a timeout. Megan Frey (Chaska, Minn.) responded with a kill and although Izabela Kozon recorded one for the home team, Mickens ended the set with the final kill to win it 25-22.
Frey had five kills in the match and while Kozon led the Blue Raiders with 14.
UConn scored four unanswered points to start the third set including a pair of kills from Jordan Kirk (Plano, Texas) and a service ace from Kate Seabaugh (St. Louis, Mo.). Kirk had six kills in the match and Seabaugh finished with the single ace which was one of six UConn aces in the match.
The Blue Raiders tied the match at 13-13 before UConn pulled away with a consistent offensive effort to win it 25-21.
UConn was held to its second-lowest hitting percentage of the match with a .061 clip, registering 10 kills to the Blue Raiders’ 16 in the third set. Middle Tennessee claimed a 25-15 decision to force a fifth set.
Murray had two of UConn’s four kills in the final set as the Blue Raiders took the match victory, winning the fifth set 15-17.
Volleyball concludes the regular season, including the BIG EAST Tournament, with a 21-11 record. UConn finished the year with a 10-4 mark in conference play.
Game Notes
· This is the first 20-plus win season for UConn under head coach Holly Strauss-O’Brien.
· Rebecca Murray led the Huskies in kills in each of the last three games.
· UConn has lost both meetings with Middle Tennessee after dropping a 3-1 decision to the visit Blue Raiders last season.
