Volleyball Wins 3-1 at Pittsburgh on Saturday Night

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Oct. 24, 2008) – Chauntay Mickens (Germantown, Md.) led the University of Connecticut women’s volleyball team (15-7, 4-3) to a 3-1 victory at Pittsburgh (14-9, 6-2). Mickens recorded her third 20 kill performance of the season for a match-high. Jordan Kirk (Plano, Texas) finished the match with 10 kills.
Lauren Lamberti (Cary, Ill.) was one of four players to have at least one service ace against the Panthers, contributing a team-best three. Lamberti did not commit a service error and finished the night with six kills and two digs.
After dropping the first set 25-19, UConn rallied from a six-point deficit to tie the second set 16-16. Kills by Megan Frey (Chaska, Minn.), Mickens and Lamberti comprised the six-point run. UConn earned its first lead with a kill from Lamberti (17-16). An error on the Huskies’ part would tie the set again, but Mickens’ kill regained the 18-17 edge.
The set was tied five-more times before UConn prevailed to a 25-23 win with 12 kills. Frey finished the match with six kills and seven digs.
In the third set, the score was tied 12 times and lead changed hands eight times before UConn pulled ahead 2-1 in the match. Mickens had five kills and Lamberti went 4-for-6 in the third set to help the Huskies to a 28-26 win.
UConn had its best team hitting-percentage of the night with a .425 effort in the fourth set to prevail to a 25-23 win. Both Kirk and Mickens had six kills in the fourth set. The Panthers and the Huskies exchanged the lead twice with neither team holding more than a three-point advantage.
Three Pittsburgh players had double-digit kill efforts with Amy Town and Kelly Campbell each finishing the night with 12. Jessica Moses had 11 kills.
The Huskies resume BIG EAST play on Sunday with a 1 p.m. match at West Virginia (6-15, 0-8).
Game Notes
· The Huskies improve to 8-13 against the Panthers in the all-time series and have a 2-2 record against Pittsburgh under the direction of head coach Holly Strauss-O’Brien.
· Chauntay Mickens has led the UConn offense in kills for three-straight games and has posted a career-high mark of 20 kills in the last two games.
· In each of the last three matches, Jordan Kirk has recorded 10 or more kills in each of the last three matches.
