Baseball Enters Final Game of Blue/White World Series

STORRS, Conn. (October 14, 2008) — The University of Connecticut baseball team enters its final game of the annual Blue/White World Series on Tuesday afternoon as the series is tied 1-1 after the two weekend games. Game time is set for 3:00 at J.O. Christian Field.
The Huskies, who were separated into two teams will finish their fall season with the deciding game. Tonight's game will be a seven inning-game beginning at 3:00 p.m.
Friday night's game, the first of the series, featured a battle into extra innings as an four-run eighth inning gave the Blue Team the 5-1 win over the White Team. The first run of the game was posted by the Blue Team's John Sulzicki (Stratford, Conn.), who got on base with a lead-off single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Sulzicki was able to score with one out as freshman John Andreoli (Shrewsbury, Mass.) recorded a single in his second at-bat of the game.
Senior Matt McDonald (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) did not allow a hit in his four innings on the hill for the Blue Team as the White Team connected for their first hit in the fifth inning with a base hit by freshman Tim Martin (Stratford, Conn.). The White Team was able to tie the game and send it into extra innings as sophomore Mike Nemeth (Washington, N.J.) singled in the seventh inning and went to second on a passed ball. He later scored on a double by freshman Nick Ahmed (East Longmeadow, Mass.).
In the eighth inning, back-to-back singles from the Blue Team put runners at first and second with no outs before a walk loaded the bases. Freshman Ryan Thompson (Amherst, N.H.) recorded his first hit of the afternoon with a single, knocking in two runs to put the Blue Team up 3-1. After another walk by the White Team's bullpen, Andreoli picked up his second hit of the game, recording another RBI for his team to clinch the first game victory.
In the second game of the series, on Saturday morning, the White Team downed the Blue Team 9-2, led by sophomore Elliot Glynn (Los Alamitos, Calif.) with a 2-for-4 performance, including one homerun. Glynn's solo shot in the fourth, sparked a three-run inning after his team recorded four runs in the third inning to take control over the game. Freshman Billy Ferriter (Nashua, N.H.) also went 2-for-4 with two runs scored while Harold Brantley, Jr. (Silver Springs, Md.) scored twice with two hits on the afternoon. The White Team's starter, sophomore Ted Hurvul (Monroe, Conn.) struck out five in three innings thrown.
The Blue Team was led by junior Peter Fatse (Hampden, Mass.) with two hits and one run scored and Mike Olt (Branford, Conn.) who picked up a solo homerun to lead off the seventh inning for his team.
Tuesday afternoon's game will determine the winner of the Blue/White World Series while admission is free for all fans.
