STORRS, Conn. (September 5, 2007)-- The University of Connecticut announced its 2007-08 men’s basketball schedule Wednesday, a demanding slate that will feature as many as 15 nationally-televised regular season contests and the return of an 18-game BIG EAST Conference schedule.
UConn will play a minimum of 13 regular season match-ups on national television in 2007-08, two on CBS, nine on ESPN or espn2, and two on ESPNU. The Huskies can pick up an additional two appearances on espn2 by advancing to the championship round of the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic at Madison Square Garden in New York.
Local television broadcast plans for the remainder of the schedule will be announced at a later date.
The BIG EAST Conference returns to an 18-game regular season schedule for the first time since the 1998-99 season, a year in which UConn went 16-2 and captured the league regular season title, the league tournament title and the NCAA National Championship. Each league school plays every school once and three opponents twice, one home and one away. The Huskies play Cincinnati, Notre Dame and Providence twice.
The home schedule features nine contests at the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion on the UConn campus in Storrs. That includes the exhibition opener on Thursday, November 1 against Assumption. Highlighting the Gampel Pavilion schedule will be nationally televised contests against Georgia Tech (Feb. 9/ESPN) and Notre Dame (Feb. 13/espn2). It will be the first appearance for both the Yellow Jackets and the Fighting Irish in Gampel. The Huskies will also play host to the Storrs Regional of the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic at Gampel on November 7 and 8. The teams and matchups for those games will be announced in the next few weeks.
The Huskies will play 10 contests at the Hartford Civic Center, including one exhibition contest against Bryant University on Sunday, November 4. Headlining the Civic Center schedule will be nationally televised games against Louisville (Jan. 28) and Pittsburgh (Feb. 2) on ESPN and CBS, respectively. The Huskies will also host Quinnipiac University on December 16, the return of former UConn associate head coach Tom Moore, now entering his first season as head coach of the Bobcats.
The Husky road slate will include a non-conference trip to Boston on December 1 to face Gonzaga University in the Basketball Hall of Fame Challenge at the TD Banknorth Garden. Boston College and Providence will also meet in the doubleheader. With a pair of wins on November 7 and 8, UConn could advance to the championship round of the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic at Madison Square Garden in New York. Kentucky, Memphis and Oklahoma are the other regional hosts in the 16-team tournament. The Huskies will conclude non-conference play with a contest at Indiana University in Bloomington on January 26. That contest will be televised nationally by CBS.
