STORRS, Conn. (June 19, 2007) — University of Connecticut baseball senior shortstop Dennis Donovan (Center Moriches, N.Y.) has been named to the American Baseball Coaches Association Northeast Region Second Team following his efforts on the diamond this season.
Donovan, who paced the Huskies in 2006 in nearly every major offensive category from his shortstop position, helped lead Connecticut to the BIG EAST Championship game as the league’s eighth overall seed. In that game, UConn dropped a heartbreaking, one-run decision to Rutgers after mounting a furious rally in the top of the ninth inning. Despite the loss, the Huskies’ improbable run to the final game marked the lowest seed to ever play for the BIG EAST Tournament championship.
Serving as team captain, Donovan paced the Huskies in batting average (.333), hits (83), home runs (9) and RBIs (46). Donovan turned in a career performance at Central Connecticut late in the season in helping the Huskies close the season by winning 13 of the final 17 games of the year. In that game, Donovan finished his afternoon 5-for-5 with two home runs and a career-best six RBIs in UConn’s 13-4 win over the Blue Devils. He was one of only 10 players in the BIG EAST to record a five-hit game this season. Donovan completed his career at UConn with a .311 batting average with 118 RBIs and 14 home runs. He also ranks first on UConn’s all-time games played list with 204, while also owning the top spot in school history with 599 career assists.
Donovan recently agreed to terms with the Kansas City Royals and is currently at the club’s developmental complex in Surprise, Ariz.
