PROVIDENCE, R.I. (May 14, 2007) — University of Connecticut junior starting pitcher Mike Tarsi (Danbury, Conn.) has been named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week following his efforts in helping lead UConn to a 5-1 record last week, including a series victory over West Virginia at J.O. Christian Field.
Tarsi posted a 1-0 overall record and a 0.00 earned run average in the 10 total innings in the two games in which he appeared. He finished the week with nine strikeouts and just one walk while allowing his opponents to a mere .200 batting average.
In UConn’s 8-7 win at Northeastern on May 7, Tarsi earned the start because of the Huskies’ long layoff following their three-game series against Georgetown. Tarsi earned a no decision after only pitching the first inning in order to keep his arm fresh having not thrown since Apr. 27.
Tarsi followed that outing by hurling his second complete game of the season in UConn’s 5-0 blanking of West Virginia Friday afternoon in a critical three-game series with West Virginia. Tarsi scattered seven hits and did not walk a batter, threw 111 pitches to even his record at 4-4 on the year and matched a career-high with eight strikeouts. The complete game was Tarsi's second in his last three BIG EAST starts, joining a nine inning effort in a 6-4 win at Cincinnati on April 20. It was UConn's third shutout of the year as a team, and the first complete game shutout by a Husky hurler since Tim Norton held Villanova scoreless in a 1-0 win last April 9.
Tarsi becomes to first Husky to garner BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week accolades since former UConn ace Tim Norton accomplished the feat April 10, 2006.
