PITTSBURGH, Pa. (September 24, 2006) – The University of Connecticut volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (30-25, 25-30, 30-20, 30-23) match to Pittsburgh on Sunday, Sept. 14 in Pittsburgh, Pa.
The Panthers (12-5, 1-1 BIG EAST) grabbed the first point of the match but the Huskies (10-4, 1-1 BIG EAST) came back with three straight points to go up 3-1. The two teams traded points before Pitt went on a 5-0 run to take over the lead at 9-5. UConn fought back and regained the lead after kills by sophomore Lorelle Schaub (New Brighton, Minn.) with the score 14-12. The Panthers went on a 4-0 run late in the game to take the lead once again before winning game one 30-25.
UConn took an early 3-0 lead in game one behind serves from junior Julie Pickard (Hillsborough, N.C.). Neither team could gain more than a one point lead before three straight attack errors by Pitt pushed the UConn lead to 19-15. Three kills late in game two by junior Gina Heiderman (Niles, Ill.) allowed the Huskies to keep control of the lead and win 30-25.
Game three was much like the first two as the two teams battled back and forth. The Panthers capitalized on UConn attack errors, which gave them a 13-10 edge. Big blocks from Stephanie Ross and Jessica Moses of Pitt gave the Panthers five unanswered points and a 21-12 lead. Pitt closed out game three 30-20.
In the fourth game, Pitt’s Michelle Rossi served up eight straight points with the score showing 11-4 in favor of the Panthers. A kill from Heiderman and service ace by freshman Kate Seabaugh (St. Louis, Mo.) gave the Huskies a lift to close the gap at 24-17. But the Panthers were too much and won game four 30-23.
Heiderman led the team with 15 kills while Schaub had a season-best 10 kills with Seabaugh adding nine. Freshman Bridget Denson-Dorman had 49 assists while freshman Jessica Isaac (Erlanger, Ky.) had a match-high 19 digs.
