STORRS, Conn. (May 10, 2006) – Junior co-captain Larry Day (Amesbury, Mass.) went 2-for-5 with three RBI to help the Connecticut Huskies defeat the Northeastern Huskies 7-1 on Wednesday afternoon. Day notched two doubles in the game, including one in the third inning that drove in what would eventually be the winning run. The win improves UConn to 31-15-1 on the season while Northeastern dips to 22-20.
Starter John Slusarz (Farmington, Conn.) pitched a shutout for UConn through five and two-thirds innings before Chris Emanuele went yard and tallied Northeastern’s only run of the game. Slusarz threw six innings and only gave up two hits to record the 10th straight win over Northeastern for UConn. Northeastern has not defeated Connecticut since 1996. Senior Joe Smeraglino (Shelton, Conn.) pitched two scoreless innings of relief for Connecticut before junior Matt Karl (Wallingford, Conn.) came in to close the game in the ninth. UConn’s pitching gave up a mere five hits in nine innings.
At the plate, Connecticut’s bats came alive for the second straight game. The team recorded a total of 12 hits. Freshman Dale Brannon (St. Petersberg, Fla.) continues to show power at the plate as he went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Sophomore Pat Mahoney (Des Moines, Iowa) had two hits in five at-bats along with two RBI on the day for UConn.
The scoring began for UConn in the bottom of the second inning. Senior Bryan Maler (Ansonia, Conn.) led off the inning with a walk. He stole second during the next at-bat and was moved to third on a groundout by junior Josh Farkes (Boston, Mass.). Maler scored on Brannon’s first hit of the game to put Connecticut on the board.
UConn extended its lead in the second inning as it recorded two more runs. With junior Matt Untiet (Berlin, Conn.) on first base, Day slugged his first double of the game and recorded his first RBI as Untiet came around to score. Day crossed the plate in the next at-bat as Mahoney singled up the middle.
Connecticut scored four more times before Northeastern was able to get on the board in the sixth inning. The score stood at 7-1 until the final out in the top of the ninth.
The Huskies of Connecticut return to BIG EAST action as they travel to Pittsburgh for a three-game series this weekend. As released by the conference office, UConn has officially clinched a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament and will be flying to Clearwater, Fla. at the end of May to battle for its first BIG EAST Championship since 1994.
