STORRS, Conn. (December 4, 2006) – University of Connecticut women’s hockey sophomore goaltender Brittany Wilson (Nepean, Ont.) has been named the Hockey East Association’s Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this young season and the third in her career.
Wilson made a career-high 37 saves, including 13 in the third period, to anchor the Huskies in a 4-2 win on the road over No. 9 Boston College on Saturday afternoon at the Eagles’ Kelley Rink at Conte Forum. The win is her 10th of the season, making Wilson just the second Husky netminder to ever hit double figures in a single season. Kaitlyn Shain won 12 games for UConn in 2004-05.
Wilson previously earned the honor this year on Oct. 30 after stopping 62 of the 67 shots she faced as the Huskies swept a pair of games from Wayne State. Last season, won the award on Jan. 30 after leading UConn to a home-and-home weekend sweep of Northeastern.
On the year, Wilson is fourth in Hockey East with a 2.06 goals against average, is tied for the league lead with 10 wins and ranks third with her .927 save percentage.
Off to the best start in school history at 10-4-1 overall and 7-1-1 in Hockey East games, UConn returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 5 when the Huskies play host to No. 5 Harvard at 7:00 p.m. UConn had never previously won more than seven of its first 15 games and had never hit double digits in wins prior to Jan. 16.
