STORRS, Conn. (December 11, 2006) – University of Connecticut women’s hockey sophomore goaltender Brittany Wilson (Nepean, Ont.) has been named the Hockey East Association’s Defensive Player of the Week for the second week in a row, the third time this season, and the fourth in her career.
Wilson stopped 25 shots in UConn’s win over No. 5 Harvard on Dec. 5. The win is UConn’s first ever over the perennial power from Cambridge and catapulted the Huskies to their highest ever national ranking at No. 9. The win was Wilson’s 11th of the year, leaving her (with 16 regular season games yet to play) just one victory shy of Kaitlyn Shain’s school record of 12 set in 2004-05.
Wilson previously earned the honor this year on Oct. 30 and Dec. 4. The first time came after stopping 62 of the 67 shots she faced as the Huskies swept a pair of games from Wayne State. The latter was for making a career-high 37 saves, including 13 in the third period, as the Huskies knocked off the then-No. 9 Eagles of Boston College, 4-2. Last season, she won the award on Jan. 30 after leading UConn to a home-and-home weekend sweep of Northeastern.
On the year, Wilson is fourth in Hockey East with a 2.06 goals against average, leads the league lead with 11 wins and ranks second with her .927 save percentage. Her 11 wins tie for third in the nation behind just the 15 posted by Laura Hosier of Mercyhurst and Minnesota’s Brittony Chartier who has 12. Meaghan Guckian of St. Lawrence also has 11 wins this season.
The Huskies return to action in three weeks when they participate in the annual Nutmeg Classic. The Huskies open play in the annual event with a contest at Yale on Dec. 29.
