STORRS, Conn. (November 1, 2006) - University of Connecticut women’s hockey junior forward Jaclyn Hawkins (Manotick, Ont.) has been named the Hockey East Association’s Player of the Month for October.
Hawkins leads all league scorers through one month of play with both her 10 goals and 19 points. Her nine assists, meanwhile, ties for second best in the conference, one behind the 10 amassed by Martine Garland of New Hampshire. Hawkins has a pair of hat tricks to her credit already this young season as she has helped the Huskies break from the gates at 7-10-0 overall and 4-0-0 in Hockey East play, both of which are by far the fastest starts in school history.
The season opened on a high note for the newly-anointed captain as she hat a six-point night in UConn’s season-opening 8-2 win over Vermont on Oct. 6 as she netted a hat trick and also assisted on three other Husky tallies. Hawkins scored two more goals the following night in a 3-0 win over the Catamounts. Hawkins tied an NCAA record, and set a Hockey East benchmark, by netting three power play goals in UConn’s 8-3 win over Maine on Oct. 21. The feat had previously been done three times nationally and last by Jenny Potter of Minnesota-Duluth against St. Cloud State on Dec. 8, 2003. The hat trick was part of a five-point day as she also assisted on two more UConn goals in the win.
This past weekend she scored two goals and added four assists in a pair of one-goal UConn victories over Wayne State as the Huskies won by 4-3 and 3-2 scores. Only one of UConn’s seven goals over the weekend did not involve Hawkins in the scoring.
During this season-opening run, Hawkins has assaulted the UConn career record book. The 19 points for the season thus far give her 86 in her Husky career, topping Tiffany Owens’ previous school benchmark of 77 set from 2001-05. The 10 goals give Hawkins 47 over career, also passing Owens for the school record. Meanwhile, the nine assists give Hawkins 39 as a Husky, equalling Megan McLeod (2001-05) for second place behind only Owens’ 40. Hawkins now has five career hat tricks. Other than Hawkins, there have only been seven other hat tricks in Husky hockey history. Though the season is just one month complete and the team has 26 regular season games to play, Hawkins already ranks ninth on the seasonal point chart and is tied for sixth for most goals in a season.
Hawkins and the Huskies will return to action this weekend when the team travels to Columbus, Ohio to face Ohio State. The teams will face off Friday night, Nov. 3, at 7:00 p.m. and on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 4:00 p.m.
