PROVIDENCE, R.I. (October 22, 2006) - Sophomore Brittany Wilson (Nepean, Ont.) made 31 saves for her second career shutout and one goal by freshman Michelle Binning (Oshawa, Ont.) was all the University of Connecticut women’s ice hockey team would need in a 1-0 win over Providence College on Sunday afternoon at the Friars’ Schneider Arena. The win continues the best start in school history by the Huskies who are now 5-1 and 4-0 in Hockey East play while the Friars dip to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in league action.
It marks UConn’s first ever shutout of the Friars, a perennial power who lead a lopsided all-time series with UConn 13-5-2. Overall, it was the first time that PC had ever been shutout in a Hockey East game and the Friars' first shutout overall since a 3-0 loss to Harvard on Nov. 11, 2003, a span of 110 games. Though just her 11th career start, it was Wilson’s second career shutout, the other coming by an 8-0 score over Niagara on Jan. 8, 2006 when she made 19 saves in her first career start.
Prior to this season, UConn (5-1) had never stood at better than 3-3 after its first six games. Perfect in league play, UConn’s previous best four-game Hockey East start was a 2-1-1 clip to begin the 2003-04 campaign.
Wilson scored the first goal of her collegiate career 2:11 into the game off of assists from senior Natalie Vibert (Thunder Bay, Ont.) and sophomore Britney Chandler (Pickering, Ont.). PC outshot UConn 31-27 in the game and 11-7 in the third period. Both teams were unsuccessful on four power play tries.
UConn returns to action on Friday night, Oct. 27, when the Huskies play host to Wayne State at 7:00 p.m.
