Volleyball Splits Final Day At Clemson Invitational

Clemson, S.C. -- The University of Connecticut women’s volleyball team finished up play at the Clemson Invitational on Saturday by splitting its matches on the final day. The Huskies (1-2) closed out the tournament on a high note, defeating Western Carolina, 3-0, after falling to Kentucky earlier in the day by a score of 3-0.
In UConn's first match of the day, senior Heather Ashley (Smithburg, Md.) led the way for the Huskies with 10 kills. She also had two service aces and five digs in the match. Fellow senior Megan Crawley (Georgetown, Texas) had nine kills and six digs along with one block in the loss. Sophomore Brittany Stewart (Dolton, Ill.) continued her strong play, notching seven kills, one ace and four digs in the match.
Ashlee Fisher led the Wildcats (2-0) with 16 kills in the 30-24, 30-25, 30-22 sweep of the Huskies. Queen Nzenwa had 10 kills for Kentucky while Jenni Casper had three service aces and 11 digs.
In Connecticut's 30-27, 30-15, 30-22 victory over Western Carolina in the Huskies closing match, Crawley led the way with 16 kills. She also had five digs and one solo block in the victory. Ashley also continued her stellar play throughout the final match of the tournament, collecting 11 kills and three service aces in the win. Sophomore Sade Chambers (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) had 12 kills in the victory.
The Catamounts were led by Meredith Harmon with eight kills and two blocks. Heather Koontz also had seven kills for Western Carolina on a .583 hitting percentage.
At the conclusion of play on Saturday, Crawley was named to the All-Tournament Team. The senior finished the tournament with 44 kills to lead the Huskies.
The Huskies return to action on Friday, Sept. 9 when they will host Brown at 2:00 p.m. on the first day of the UConn Toyota Classic in Gampel Pavilion. UConn will also play at 7:00 p.m. that evening when they host the University of New Hampshire.
