HAMDEN, Conn. (Sept. 26, 2005) – Freshman Alison Koch won the “D” singles flight and advanced to the doubles “B” flight final to highlight the University of Connecticut women’s tennis team’s participation in the Quinnipiac Women’s Invitational this weekend in Hamden, Conn.
Koch cruised past Bucknell’s Camille Simonetti, 6-1, 6-2, in her opening match and then topped three Bobcats on their home courts for the title. Koch knocked off Nicole Adams, 6-0, 6-2 in the quarterfinal, Amy Sarrazin, 6-3, 2-6 (10-6) in the semifinal and Kasey Rosenberger, 6-2, 6-1 in the final.
At the “A” singles level, Jaclyn Shapiro won her opening round match, beating Elizabeth Anderson of Maryland-Baltimore County 6-3, 6-7 (3) (10-6), but fell to Rutgers’ Katrina Elder-Bush, 6-2, 6-4, in the quarterfinals. Christine Burek dropped a pair of “A” flight matches, losing to Tina Hoang of Quinnipiac and UMBC’s Ale Pedergnana. The “B” singles draw saw a combined 0-4 result for Huskies Jessica Porter and Liz Dibbs. At the “C” level, BreAnn Cheung dropped her first match to JoAnna Grossman of Bucknell, 6-1, 6-3, but she turned around and topped Caitlin Baffa of Bucknell in the back draw. Ashley Petruzzi lost both of her “C” matches for Connecticut.
Dibbs and Shapiro were victorious in their opening round doubles “A” match, taking an 8-5 decision over Hana Chovanova and Sandy Wijerante of Stony Brook before falling, 8-2, to eventual flight winners Masha Pozar and Michele Spiess of Massachusetts. Burek and Cheung also played in the top doubles draw, but lost their opening match, 8-4, to Chelsea Mills and Ashley Globerman of Bucknell. Porter and Petruzzi represented UConn in the “B” doubles competition, but fell by an 8-2 score to Jana Bartolini and Carly Ludmer of UMass.
Koch also produced the best doubles run of the weekend for UConn, but the Huskies did it with a little help for their BIG EAST friends. Koch played with Sylvia Jaros of Seton Hall, the singles “B” winner, and advanced all the way to the doubles “B” final. After an opening round win over a UMBC tandem, the Husky/Pirate combination posted shutout, 8-0, wins over teams from Quinnipiac and Bucknell in the quarterfinals and semifinal, respectively, to advance to the final. There the BIG EAST team was done-in by fellow conference mate Rutgers as Jill Markowitz and Anela Dujsic posted an 8-5 win to take the crown.
The Huskies return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Amherst to face UMass at 2:30 p.m.
