Women's Tennis Signs Four to Letters of Intent

STORRS, Conn. (May 4, 2005) – The University of Connecticut women’s tennis team has signed four student-athletes to National Letters of Intent for the 2005-06 season as announced by head coach Glenn Marshall on Wednesday afternoon. The class includes student-athletes from Arizona, Georgia, Illinois and Pennsylvania.
BreAnn Cheung is a native of Tucson, Ariz., and attends Catalina Foothills High School. Cheung made up of half of the 2004 state title doubles team at Foothill and helped lead the team to three-straight Class 4A state team championships. She ranked third in the Southwest Section and is in the top-200 nationally. Cheung is also a member of the National Honors Society and DECA.
Alison Koch attends Plymouth Whitemarsh High School and is from Lafayette Hill, Pa. In 2004, she was a member of the Zonal Team that won the gold medal for the Middle States 16’s. After competing in numerous Philadelphia District and Middle States Sectional Tournaments, Koch received the Sportsmanship Award from the Philadelphia District of the U.S. Tennis Association. Koch also qualified for the State Championships in 2003 and 2004 at Plymouth Whitemarsh, and finished in the top eight in both years. This spring, Koch will be inducted into the Maccabi Hall of Fame after winning gold, silver and bronze medals over the past four years at the Maccabi International Games.
Jessica Porter, a native of Duluth, Ga., is a transfer from the University of New Hampshire. Prior to competing for the Wildcats during her 2004-05 freshman season, Porter attended Woodward Academy. Voted Most Valuable Player four times in high school, Porter was ranked in the top 35 in the G18 Southern second and was one of the top five G18 in the state of Georgia. She was also a four-year honor roll student.
Jackie Shapiro is a native of Deerfield, Ill. Nationally ranked since the age of nine and a strong competitor against Midwest opponents, Shapiro has played for Deerfield High School all four years. She won the Junior Wightman Cup of the Chicago district in 2004 and will compete in various ITA events this summer. Shapiro placed third in the Midwest 18’s Open, fourth in the Midwest 18’s doubles and finished third in the Midwest 16’s Open. Shapiro is also a strong student who is involved with community service projects through her school.
“I am extremely pleased with the student athletes that we have coming into the UConn Women's Tennis program," Marshall says. "These four young women will all make immediate contributions to the team. I anxiously look forward to welcoming them in the fall of 2005.”
