CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (December 8) - The University of Connecticut women's ice hockey team fell at No. 9 Harvard, 3-1, on Thursday evening. It was the third-straight loss for the Huskies, who are now 5-12-0 on the season. Harvard is now 7-4-2 on the season.
The Huskies struck first in the game, with sophomore Jaclyn Hawkins (Manotick, Ontario) tallying her seventh goal of the season just 31 seconds into play to give UConn the quick lead. She was assisted on the play by junior Natalie Vibert (Thunder Bay, Ontario).
The UConn lead was short, however, as the Crimson's Jennifer Sifers tied the game at 1-1 at the 5:57 mark in the first period. She was assisted by Liza Solley by way of Nora Sluzas for the tying goal.
Neither team was able to connect in the second period as the score remained knotted at 1-1 headed into the final stanza of play. When senior Janelle Armitage (Kinsella, Alberta) was sent to the penalty box for tripping at the 4:07 point in the third, the No. 9 Crimson took advantage of having an extra skater on the ice. Laura Brady scored with just 20 seconds remaining in the power play, at the 5:47 mark, to give Harvard the 2-1 lead. The Crimson increased their lead to two goals just two minutes later, when Solley took a pass from Jenny Brine to score the Crimsons third goal 7:56 into the period. Solley had a hand in all of Harvard's three goals in the game, as she also assisted on the game winner by Brady.
Senior Kaitlyn Shain (Calgary, Alberta) had 38 saves in the net for the Huskies while taking the loss. Ali Boe had 14 saves in goal for the Crimson for the win. Harvard out-shot UConn, 41-15 for the game. Harvard was 1-for-3 on the power play while the Huskies were 0-for-4 with the man advantage.
The next contest for UConn will be Jan. 1, when the Huskies travel to Vermont to take on the Catamounts. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
Four Huskies will be participating in the Hockey East All-Star Game against the U.S. National Team at the University of New Hampshire on Sunday, Dec. 11 at 2:00 p.m. Shain, Vibert, Hawkins and senior Jennifer Houlden (Richmond Hill, Ontario) will be joined in New Hampshire by a familiar face, as UConn Head Coach Heather Linstad will be the head coach of the Hockey East team. The game will be shown live on Comcast CN8.
