STORRS, Conn. (December 6) - The University of Connecticut women's ice hockey team fell to Brown University, 1-0, on Tuesday evening in the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum. With the loss, the Huskies slip to 5-11-0 overall while Brown is now 4-7-1 overall.
The two teams kept the game close in the opening minutes of the first stanza, with each having good looks at the net but were foiled by the other team's defensive efforts. Following a interference penalty against freshman Brianna Uliasz (Chalfont, Pa.) at the 15:04 mark in the first period, Brown put the first and only point on the board on a goal by Ashlee Drover just 40 seconds later. Drover, who tucked the puck into the net around the leg of senior goaltender Kaitlyn Shain (Calgary, Alberta) for the score, was assisted by Hayley Moore and Kathryn Moos.
The Brown defense suffocated all UConn attempts to score in the second period, as the Bears out-shot the Huskies, 14-5. The Huskies had several good looks at the goal in the third period, especially after Shain was removed from the net so that UConn could have another skater on the ice with 1:59 remaining in play. Despite out-shooting the Bears, 13-8, for the period, the Huskies could not connect to tie the game.
For the game, the two teams were even in shots with 29 apiece. Shain had 28 saves while in goal to take the loss while O'Hara Shipe had 29 saves for the Bears in the win. UConn was 0-for-4 on the power play while Brown was 1-for-3 with the man advantage.
The Huskies will next be in action on Thursday, Dec. 8 when they travel to Cambridge, Mass. to take on Harvard. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
