VILLANOVA, Pa. (November 6) - The University of Connecticut volleyball team fell to Villanova, 3-0 (19-30, 23-30, 18-30) on Sunday afternoon at Villanova. It concludes the road portion of the Huskies season. With the loss, UConn snaps a three match winning streak and is now 13-13 overall and 5-7 against BIG EAST competition.
The score was tied eight times in the first game before Villanova opened up a 14-10 lead, a lead they would hold through the end of the game. Freshman Sarah Singer (Waukesha, Wisc.) and junior Kaity Craig (Terryville, Conn.) led the Huskies with four kills apiece in the game while senior Megan Crawley (Georgetown, Texas) had three kills and three digs in the game.
The second game proved to be the closest of the three, as the score was knotted 13 times and the two teams traded points back and forth throughout the early going. UConn took a 17 to 15 lead on the 1,000th kill of Crawley's career. She is only the ninth Husky to have 1,000 kills for her career and following the match stands eighth on the all-time list. However, after that milestone, Villanova came back to tie the game at 17 before taking the 18 to 17 lead. The Wildcats would stay ahead of the Huskies for the rest of the game. Crawley had seven kills in the game as well as five digs and junior Megan Silver (Snohomish, Wash.) had two kills.
Despite five kills from Crawley and four from Craig, the third game was all Villanova, as the Wildcats took an early 9 to 6 lead and never looked back.
For the match, Crawley led UConn with 15 kills and 10 digs. She also had three block assists in the loss. Craig had eight kills and two block assists while Singer had seven kills and five digs. Sophomore Brittany Stewart (Dolton, Ill.) had ten digs in the match.
Villanova was led by Alona Cherkez, who had 17 kills in the match. She also had two service aces and three solo blocks. Dana Jabashima had 10 kills and 11 digs for the Wildcats while Kacy Sellers added seven kills and six digs.
The Huskies are next in action on Friday, Nov. 11 when they host Pittsburg in Gampel Pavilion. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
