Huskies Fall At Wayne State, 3-2

DETROIT, Mich. (November 5) - Despite two third period goals, the University of Connecticut women's ice hockey team closed out the weekend with a 3-2 loss at Wayne State on Saturday afternoon. With the loss the Huskies slip to 2-5-0 overall while Wayne State is 3-5-2 on the season. Wayne State took the first game of the series, 1-0, on Friday evening.
The Warriors struck first offensively, picking up the first goal of the game 11:07 into the opening period. Melissa Boal scored for Wayne State with an assist from Sam Poyton. For the period, the two teams both took seven shots and UConn was 0-for-2 on the power play while Wayne State did not have any power play opportunities.
Wayne State again had the only goal of the period in the second stanza. Poyton connected with the back of the net at the 9:29 mark after freshman Brianna Uliasz (Chalfont, Pa.) was sent to the penalty box for interference. Poyton was assisted by Sarah Campbell and Boal on the play.
Poyton continued to burn the Huskies in the third period, picking up her third point of the game and second goal on the power play just 8:42 into the stanza. Boal also picked up her third point of the game with an assist on the goal and Lindsay DiPietro also assisted on the play.
The Huskies battled back, however, as sophomore Jaclyn Hawkins (Manotick, Ontario) scored her fourth goal of the season at the 14:33 mark in the third following assists from Uliasz and junior Leslie Hurlburt (Markham, Ontario). With 1:40 left to play, the Huskies pulled freshman goaltender Brittany Wilson (Nepean, Ontario) out of the net for an extra skater on the ice. With that extra skater, sophomore Liz Gallinaro (Amherst, Mass.) scored with just 25 seconds left on the clock to bring UConn within one. Hawkins and Uliasz both assisted on the play and UConn could not tie the game before time expired.
For the game, the Warriors out-shot UConn, 22-19. The Huskies were 0-for-7 on the power play while Wayne State went 2-for-8. Wilson picked up 19 saves in her first collegiate start while giving up three goals.
The Huskies are next in action on Saturday, Nov. 12 when they host Boston University in the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
