Women's Hockey Defeats Boston University, 1-0, In Overtime

BOSTON, Mass. (November 20) - Freshman Samantha Reid (Innisfil, Ontario) scored 2:38 into overtime to give the University of Connecticut women's ice hockey team the 1-0 victory at Boston University on Sunday. With the win, the Huskies are now 4-7-0 overall and 3-3-0 against Hockey East competition while Boston University is 5-7-3 overall and 3-4-2 in the league. It was UConn's second victory over the Terriers on the season.
Despite out-shooting the Terriers, 12-3, in the first period, UConn could not connect to score. The second period saw a shift, as the Terriers out-shot the Huskies, 10-8. UConn came back to out-shoot Boston University, 13-7, in the third stanza and held a 33-20 shot advantage heading into extra time.
UConn had already taken one shot in the overtime when the Terrier's Emily Schwarz was called for tripping at the 2:34 mark. The Huskies quickly took advantage of the power play situation as Reid took a pass from sophomore Jaclyn Hawkins (Manotick, Ontario) and scored the game winner just four seconds later. It was the second goal of Reid's career and the fourth assist for Hawkins on the season.
For the game, UConn out-shot Boston University, 35-20. The Huskies were one-for-seven on the power play while the Terriers were 0-for-four with an extra skater on the ice. In goal, senior Kaitlyn Shain (Calgary, Alberta) had 20 saves while getting the win for the Huskies. It is her third shutout of the season and the tenth of her career. Allyse Wilcox had 34 saves for the Terriers while taking the loss.
UConn is next in action on Friday, Nov. 25 when the Huskies travel to Canton, N.Y. for a two-game set against No. 1 St. Lawrence. Both Friday and Saturday's games are scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
