BUFFALO, N.Y. (November 19, 2005) - Canisius' Andrew Dawe scored with less than a minute remaining to overtime to defeat the University of Connecticut men's hockey team, 4-3. The Huskies drop to 3-5-1 overall and 2-4-0 in the Atlantic Hockey Association while the Griffs improve to 5-6-1 overall and 3-4-1 in the AHA.
The Huskies were down 3-2 with :44 left on the clock in regulation when junior B.J. Crum (Hampden, Mass.) set off the lights and buzzers with help from Cole Koidahl (Minneapolis, Minn.) to tie the score at 3-3. This was Crum's second goal of the weekend series, having helped the Huskies to a 9-3 victory on Friday night.
It was Koidahl that began the scoring for the Huskies, taking a 1-0 advantage within the first two minutes of the game. Senior captain Chris Uber (Ithaca, N.Y.) and freshman Chris Myhro (Eden Prairie, Minn.) assisted on the play. The Huskies would maintain the lead for only five minutes before the Griffs went on a three goal run.
In the first period, Joey Connimiglio scored the first goal for Canisius at the 6:27 mark of the stanza. He was assisted in the game-tying goal by Spencer Churchill and Kevin Kozlowski. Connimiglio and Churchill assisted on the Griffs' second goal of the evening scored by Tim Songin in the second period to take the lead, 2-0.
In the third period, the Griffs scored their final goal of regulation at the 12:49 mark. It was Connimiglio and Churchill again on assists with the goal by Joel Kitchen. The Huskies would not go quietly into the night in this game. Myhro scored at the 18:17 mark of the period, unassisted, and Crum followed through with the game-tying goal at 19:16 to send the game into overtime with a score of 3-3.
Going into the overtime period, the Huskies had attempted 41 shots and goalie Scott Tomes (Windham, Mass.) had made 38 saves. They fought off the Griffs' advances for nearly the whole overtime before Dawe scored at the 4:18 mark to take home the win.
The Huskies will be back in action again on Sat., November 26, at home at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum on the Storrs Campus. The game is against Army and slated for 3:05 p.m.
