BUFFALO, N.Y. (November 18, 2005) - The University of Connecticut's men's team held nothing back in its 9-3 victory over Canisius on Friday night. Three Huskies had two goals apiece to help capture the team's second Atlantic Hockey win of the season. Co-captain Matt Scherer (Seattle, Wash.), junior Scott McDougall (Mansfield, Mass.) and freshman B.J. Bayers (St. Louis Park, Minn.) each netted two goals while freshman Chris Myhro (Eden Prairie, Minn.), junior B.J. Crum (Hampden, Mass.) and junior Brian Burns (Binghamton, N.Y.) tallied the team's other three for a total nine goals, the most the team has had in a game since March 6, 2004. The Huskies improve their record to 3-4-1 overall and 2-3-0 in the AHA.
The Huskies jumped out to an early lead with two goals in the first period. Bayers began the scoring for the Huskies, tallying his first goal of the game at the 15:24 mark of the stanza. He received assists on the play from senior Ryan Palmer (Groton, Mass.) and sophomore Charles Solberg (Barrington, Ill.). Less than four minutes later, Connecticut set off the lights and buzzers again with a goal by Burns with assists from Crum and junior J.R. Corkery (Salt Lake City, Utah). At the end of the first period, the Huskies had taken a 2-0 lead over the Griffs.
Connecticut only got stronger in the second stanza. The Husky offense continued to bombard Canisius' goaltender, Max Buetow, who faced a total of 37 shots on the night while Husky freshman goalminder Jon Anderson (Vadnais Height, Minn.) was tried with only 17 shots, making 14 saves. Buetow was unable to hold up against Connecticut, and allowed three more goals in the second period. Scherer picked up his first of the night with help from sophomore John Stockler (Princeton, Minn.) at the 2:45 mark. A few minutes later, Crum scored the Huskies' fourth goal of the evening with assists from Scherer and McDougall. Scherer wasted no time adding points to his career totals with his second goal at the 15:02 mark. Bayers recorded his second goal of the evening just before the buzzer, sending Connecticut into the second intermission with a 6-0 lead.
Myhro and McDougall scored within the first five minutes of the third stanza to increase the Huskies' advantage. It was not until the 8:04 mark of the third period that the Griffs were able to get on the board. Billy Irish-Baker had his team's first goal, which was followed with Canisius' second tally just 51 seconds later on a power play goal by Kevin Kozlowski. The Griffs would capitalize on another power play before the final buzzer, but it was McDougall that finished the game with his second goal of the evening at 18:44.
The Huskies are back on Canisius' home ice on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 7:00 p.m. for the final game of the weekend series.
