BOSTON, Mass. (November 13) - The University of Connecticut women's ice hockey team fell to Northeastern, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon in Matthews Arena. UConn is now 3-6-0 overall and 2-2-0 against Hockey East competition on the season while Northeastern is 2-9-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the league.
The two teams were scoreless in the first period of play as both UConn and Northeastern took seven shots. Northeastern had one power play opportunity in the period but could not convert to score.
The game remained scoreless through much of the second stanza as well before Ashley Bielawski was able to get the puck by senior Kaitlyn Shain (Calgary, Alberta) to give Northeastern the lead. Bielawski was assisted by Cassie Sperry on the play, 18:54 into the stanza.
Northeastern increased its lead to 2-0 on a goal by Ali Bielawski 11:53 into the third stanza off an assist by Ashley Bielawski. UConn battled back, however, with freshman Kristin Russell (Dauphin, Manitoba) picking up her fourth goal of the season at the 14:05 mark to bring the Huskies to within one. Russell was assisted by sophomore Jaclyn Hawkins (Manotick, Ontario) on the play. UConn knotted the score at 2-2 just 25 seconds later when freshman Samantha Reid (Innisfil, Ontario) found the back of the net 14:30 into the period. Senior Jennifer Houlden (Richmond Hill, Ontario) and Russell assisted on the score.
The score remained tied until Jessica Coppney scored off a pass from Nikki Petrich 18:29 into the period to give Northeastern the 3-2 lead. UConn skated the final 54 seconds with an empty net, hoping that an extra skater would give them an opportunity to tie the score again, but could not successfully get anything past the Northeastern defense.
For the game, Northeastern out-shot UConn, 33-31. Both teams were 0-for-2 on the power play. Shain had 30 saves while giving up three goals and taking the loss for UConn, while Marisa Hourihan had 29 saves while giving up two goals for the win.
