STORRS, Conn. (November 12) - Senior Kaitlyn Shain (Calgary, Alberta) had 20 saves for her second shutout of the season and the ninth of her career as the University of Connecticut women's ice hockey team defeated Boston University, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon in the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum. The Huskies are now 3-5-0 overall and 2-1-0 against Hockey East competition while the Terriers are 4-5-3 and 2-2-2.
The two teams were scoreless throughout the first period, with UConn out-shooting Boston University, 14 to 6. Both teams were 0-for-1 on the power play in the period.
The Huskies got on board in the second stanza, as freshman Kristen Russell (Dauphin, Manitoba) scored 3:58 into the period off a pass from junior Leslie Hurlburt (Markham, Ontario). That would be the only scoring done by either team in the period, with UConn again out-shooting the Terriers, 12 to 7.
The UConn scoring continued in the third stanza, as sophomore Bridget King (Paxton, Mass.) knocked the puck out of the air to put the Huskies up 2-0 at the 10:25 mark. She was assisted by freshman Nicole Tritter (Toronto, Ontario) and senior Janelle Armitage (Kinsella, Alberta) on the score, her first goal of the season. Armitage wrapped up the scoring for the Huskies with her first goal of the season 18:50 into the period after Boston University pulled goalie Allyse Wilcox in order to have an extra skater on the ice.
For the game, Wilcox had 37 saves while giving up two goals and taking the loss. Shain had 20 saves for the shutout victory. UConn out-shot the Terriers, 40 to 20 and both teams were unable to capitalize on power play opportunities, each going 0-for-4 with the man advantage.
The Huskies are next in action on Sunday, Nov. 13 when they travel to Boston, Mass. to take on Northeastern. The puck is set to drop at 3:00 p.m.
