STORRS, Conn. (October 29, 2005) - Freshman Kristen Russell (Dauphin, Manitoba) had three points and senior Kaitlyn Shain (Calgary, Alberta) stopped 30 shots for her eighth career shutout and first of the season as the University of Connecticut women's ice hockey team defeated No. 10 Yale, 3-0, in the second game of the Nutmeg Classic on Saturday evening. With the win, the Huskies are now 2-2-0 (1-1-0 Hockey East) while Yale is 0-1-1 on the season.
Junior forward Leslie Hurlburt (Markham, Ontario) put the Huskies on the board early, scoring 3:29 into the period to give UConn the 1-0 advantage. Russell collected her second point of the night and her first career goal when she scored 6:04 into the second period. The goal came after Yale's Christina Sharun was sent to the penalty box for tripping, giving UConn the 5-on-4 power play advantage. The Huskies outshot the Bulldogs, 12-5, in the period.
UConn's third and final goal of the game came 9:48 into the third period, as sophomore Liz Gallinaro (Amherst, Mass.) tucked the puck into the corner of the net from the left side of the crease off passes from Russell and sophomore Jaclyn Hawkins (Manotick, Ontario). It was Gallinaro's third career goal.
For the game, UConn went 1-for-4 on the power play while Yale was 0-for-4. The Huskies outshot the Bulldogs, 32-30.
