STORRS, CT - Head Coach Bruce Marshall presented the 2003-04 University of Connecticut hockey team season awards at the annual banquet on Sunday, May 2, at the Alumni House on the Storrs campus of the University.
Senior Jason Carey was voted by his peers to receive the team’s 7th Player Award. Jason served as the backup goaltender in his senior season, taking on the role with character and class. Jason saw a significant amount of time on the ice in his first three years, and has used that experience to help guide freshman goaltender Scott Tomes. Despite seeing action in just three games this past season, Jason proved to be a true team player, and his contributions did not go unnoticed by his teammates and coaches.
Junior Tim Olsen was named the team’s MVP for the 2003-04 season after leading the team and the league in scoring. Tim was honored at the conclusion of the season as the Atlantic Hockey Association Player of the Year after being sensational in conference play for the Huskies, scoring 19 goals and 18 assists for 37 points in conference games alone. He also received the AHA Player of the Week honor a record four times over the season, including a stretch of three consecutive weeks.
The Thomas Jacquard Award was given to freshman Matt Scherer. The award is in memory of Thomas Jacquard, who was killed in an auto accident during his freshman year at UConn. The award is presented to a player who exemplifies the characteristics and qualities that Thomas embodied. Matt made his presence known in the league in his rookie season, ranking second on the team in points with 29, which also puts him atop the list for all-time single-season points by a freshman at UConn. Matt was also named to the AHA All-Rookie Team at the conclusion of the season.
Sophomore Chris Uber was given the Coach John Chapman Award. The award honors former UConn hockey Head Coach John Chapman, who passed away on January 2, 2002 at the age of 76. Coach Chapman looked for players that displayed hard work, dedication and a fierce competitive nature, and Chris embodied those qualities in his second season at UConn. Chris ranked third on the team in overall points with 25, scoring seven goals and adding 18 assists. He proved to be a strong asset on the ice, finishing the season at +10 to record the highest plus/minus on the team.
Senior captain Eric Nelson was honored with the Silver Bowl Award for his dedication to the UConn Hockey program. Eric took on the task of leading an extremely young team this past season, and proved to be a strong and capable leader. Eric scored six goals and added nine assists for 15 points to rank first in defensemen scoring on the team. He was also honored as an AHA All-Star First Team member at the conclusion of the season, after being named to the AHA All-Second Team during the preseason.
Coach Marshall also announced the 2004-05 captain, which will be Tim Olsen. Tim will be assisted by Beau McLaughin and Matt Scherer.
