BLACKSBURG, VA (April 26) -- The University of Connecticut baseball team dropped a pair of games at Virginia Tech on Monday afternoon. The Huskies fell 11-2 in Game 1 and dropped a 10-0 decision in Game 2 as the Hokies won their fifth consecutive BIG EAST contest. With the loss, the Huskies slip to 20-21 on the season, 6-11 in BIG EAST play, while the Hokies improve to 22-17, 9-9.
The Huskies got on the board first in Game 1. Kyle Messineo (Cedar Grove, NJ) led off the game with a single up the middle and would eventually score on Russ D’Argento’s sacrifice fly. However, Tech responded quickly with a run of its own in the home half of the first as the Hokies tied it up on Sean O’Brien’s RBI single into left field.
The wheels came off for the Huskies in the fourth inning as the Hokies plated seven runs in the fourth frame. Remarkably, Tech recorded six consecutive one out hits in the fourth to size control of the contest.
Jeff Hourigan struggled on the hill for UConn, going 3.2 inning and giving up eight runs on 11 hits. Jeff Landing gave up only one earned run for the Hokies and earned his fourth victory of the year.
Up 4-0, Tech blew the second game open with a six run seventh. The Hokies managed eight hits in the inning including a lead off triple by Wyatt Toregas. Andrew Wells and Brett Corey combined for the shutout for Tech.
Josh MacDonald (Milford, CT) took the loss for UConn. The sophomore righty was touched for seven runs on 12 hits in 6.1 innings of work.
Dennis Donovan (Center Moriches, NY) went 2-for-3 in the loss.
UConn is back in action on Wednesday April 28 when they take on Brown University at a site and time yet to be determined.
