STORRS, Conn. (Nov. 7, 2004) - Angie Wallace's flip-shot goal with just under eight minutes to play pushed the University of Connecticut women's hockey team to a 3-2 win over Boston College on Sunday afternoon at the Freitas Ice Forum. The victory improves the Huskies to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in HOCKEY EAST action while the Eagles slip to 1-7 overall and 0-3 in league play.
UConn carried the flow of the game for the first 10 minutes but it would be the Eagles who struck first. On a power play, Colleen Harris in the slot redirected Krystal Strassman's feed from the boards to put BC up 1-0 at the 15:42 mark of the opening period.
The Huskies tallied twice in the opening minute of the second stanza to take a 2-1 edge. Jaclyn Hawkins scored her third goal of the weekend just 24 seconds into the second as she put her own rebound past BC netminder Christine Moynihan. The flurry continued for UConn as Caitlin Salazer-Reid also netted her own rebound 50 seconds into the second frame.
Boston College equaled the score at two goals apiece midway through the third when Cristin Stuart snuck one past Shannon Murphy from a tough angle along the boards at 10:28. Wallace would net an unusual game-winner, unassisted, at 12:17. After gaining the blue line, Wallace flipped the puck 10-15 feet up into the air and on goal. The puck sailed over the catching glove of a surprised Moynihan and landed in the net to give the Huskies a 3-2 lead they would not relinquish.
Shots in the game were even at 28 with Murphy making 26 saves in the UConn net and Moynihan 25 for the Eagles. The Huskies went 0-for-4 on the power play while BC scored once on its two opportunities for the game.
UConn returns to action next weekend when the Huskies welcome the Fighting Sioux of North Dakota to the Freitas Ice Forum. Game time on Friday, Nov. 12, is at 7:00 p.m. with the teams facing off again on Saturday, Nov. 13, at 4:00 p.m. On Friday, UConn head coach Heather Linstad will go for her 200th career win. She would become just the fourth women's hockey coach in NCAA history to reach that milestone.
