Women's Hockey Falls 2-0 to Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. (Nov. 28) – The University of Connecticut women’s hockey team was defeated 2-0 by No. 8 Princeton on Sunday afternoon at Baker Rink. The game marks only the second time the Huskies have been shutout this season. UConn is now 5-5-3 (2-1-0 Hockey East) as Princeton improves to 6-4-1 (2-3-0 ECACHL).
For the second game in a row, the Tigers opened up the game with a quick goal to gain an early 1-0 lead. UConn goaltender Kaitlyn Shain (Calgary, Alberta) made got her stick on a shot by Laura Watt, but the puck trickled past just into the left corner of the net just 2:47 into the game for the 1-0 advantage.
Princeton took its one-goal lead into the first intermission while out-shooting the Huskies 9-5.
In the second stanza, the Tigers increased their lead to two on a power play goal at 16:07. Shain made two stellar saves and was sprawled out in the goal when the lose puck was picked up by Heather Jackson and lifted into the net to move the score to 2-0.
The Huskies remained down by two going into the second intermission. Through two periods, Princeton held a 20-12 advantage in shots.
UConn had a 5-on-3 advantage for 1:12 early in the third period, but was unable to capitalize. The Huskies also killed off a minute long two-man advantage for Princeton as both teams were scoreless in the final period for a 2-0 final. Connecticut skated the 1:33 with an empty net for an extra skater, but Roxanne Gaudiel and the Tiger defense continued to stifle the UConn offense.
For the game, Princeton out-shot UConn 27-23. The Huskies went 0-for-7 on the power play, and allowed one power play goal to go 5-for-6 on the penalty kill.
Connecticut continues to face nationally-ranked teams when the Huskies travel to No. 7 New Hampshire on Saturday, Dec. 4 for a 2:00 p.m. Hockey East game. UConn then concludes the first half of the season when they host 2004 Frozen Four participant and fourth-ranked Harvard on Wednesday, Dec. 8. Prior to the 7:00 p.m. game, the University of Connecticut will honor head coach Heather Linstad for her 200th career victory achieved on Nov. 13 against North Dakota.
