Women's Hockey Ties North Dakota, 2-2

STORRS, Conn. (Nov. 12) - The University of Connecticut women's hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie with North Dakota on Friday night at Freitas Ice Forum on the Storrs campus. The tie was the first of the season for both teams, with UConn moving to 4-3-1 (2-1-0 Hockey East) while North Dakota is 3-7-1 (3-7-0 WCHA).
Both teams were scoreless after one period, with UConn holding a 9-7 edge in shots. The Huskies opened the scoring just 1:18 into the second stanza when senior Angie Wallace (Mullett Lake, Mich.) poked in a pass on the from sophomore Leslie Hurlburt (Markham, Ont.) on the power play to give Connecticut a 1-0 lead. Freshman Liz Gallinaro (Amherst, Mass.) was awarded the second assist. The goal was Wallace's second of the season, with Hurlburt and Gallinaro each collecting their fifth helper.
The Fighting Sioux then tied up the game at 1-1 with their own power play goal at 3:35 in the second. Sarah Connelly tallied her first goal of the season on a single assist by Marissa Hangsleb. The score would remain knotted at 1-1 after two periods with UConn holding a 20-15 advantage in shots after 40 minutes of play.
Connecticut regained the lead when senior Tiffany Owens (Novi, Mich.) scored her fifth goal of the season four minutes into the third period. Off a feed by freshman Jaclyn Hawkins (Manotick, Ont.), Owens beat the Sioux defense down the ice and rifled a shot through the gap to the back of the net to give the Huskies a 2-1 advantage.
North Dakota would once again tie up the game 15:58 into the third stanza. Alexia Gagnon Laplante tallied a goal to move the score to 2-2 and go to overtime. In the five minutes of overtime action, the Huskies out-shot the Sioux 7-2, but were not able to capitalize on any scoring chances as the game would end in a 2-2 tie.
Overall, UConn held a 38-27 advantage in shots on goal. The Huskies were 1-for-15 on the power play, while UND was 1-for-5. Senior goaltender Shannon Murphy (Burrillville, R.I.) made 25 saves to move her undefeated streak to five games.
Connecticut will complete its series with North Dakota on Saturday, Nov. 13 with a 4:00 p.m. game at Freitas Ice Forum. UConn head coach Heather Linstad is one win shy of becoming only the fourth coach in NCAA women's hockey history to win 200 games.
