STORRS, Conn. (Oct. 22) - The University of Connecticut baseball team selected senior Jeff Hourigan and junior Tim Norton captains for the 2005 season as voted by the members of the baseball team.
"I am very pleased with the selection of Jeff and Tim as captains. Through their leadership, we look forward to returning to the BIG EAST Tournament," UConn head coach Jim Penders said.
Hourigan, a multi-tooled player with strong skills both on the mound and at the plate, joined the Huskies in the 2004 season after transferring from Clemson. A native of Beacon Falls, Conn., Hourigan hit .320 on the season and led the team in homeruns with eight. On the mound, he started 13 games, making 15 appearances overall, and led the team with seven complete games and 55 strikeouts.
"It is a great credit to Jeff to be here for one year and know that his teammates thought enough to entrust the team leadership role to him by a unanimous vote," Penders commented. "He is the team work horse, one of the top pitchers and a solid bat in the middle of the lineup. He is a throw-back type of player, very mentally and physically tough. I am happy that he is going to be a captain."
Norton walked on to the UConn baseball team as a freshman during the 2003 season, but his hard work since joining the team has earned him a scholarship. Over his two seasons, the Pascoag, R.I., native has amassed a 3-5 record over 98.1 innings pitched with a 7.16 ERA and 81 strikeouts.
"Tim is a great story of merit, hard work and the drive to improve," Penders remarked. "He epitomizes attitude, concentration and effort; three things that we as a coaching staff preach to our players every day. He is one of the hardest workers we have had and will do a great job as a captain."
