JAMAICA, N.Y. (Oct. 1) - The University of Connecticut women's soccer team improved to 3-2-0 in BIG EAST play with a 2-0 shutout against St. John’s Friday night in Jamaica, N.Y. UConn is now 6-5-0 overall on the season, and has won four of its last five games. St. John’s dropped to 0-4-0 in conference play and 4-6-0 overall.
On the defensive end, junior goalkeeper Megan Jessee (Orefield, Pa.) registered her fourth shutout of the season, stopping four shots on goal to keep St. John’s off the board. Offensively, junior Kathleen Frank (Lansing, Mich.) scored at 40:24 to give the Huskies as 1-0 lead going into the half. Frank, playing forward for only the third time this season, received a pass from fellow junior Jennifer Sullivan (Stonington, Conn.) and tucked the ball into the net for her second goal of the week.
UConn then put the game away at the 87:06 mark. Freshmen forward Karyn Riviere (Guilford, Conn.) found St. John keeper Tracey Rollings out of position and kicked the ball in through a frozen defense for her second career goal. Riviere was set up by Lauren Lattanzio (Southington, Conn.), who collected her first point as a Husky with the assist.
In a physical game, St. John’s collected 16 fouls to UConn’s 14. Shots were close with the Red Storm collecting eight, one more than the Huskies. Corner kicks were even at four apiece.
Connecticut will continue BIG EAST conference action with a game against Georgetown on Sunday, Oct. 3 at Morrone Stadium. The game will celebrate 26 years of the University of Connecticut women’s soccer program with an alumni reunion of former players.
