Andy Baylock to Coach Final Series This Weekend

STORRS, CT (May 16) - Andy Baylock will close out his 24 year career as the University of Connecticut head baseball coach this weekend with a three game series against Pittsburgh at J.O. Christian Field. The series will begin on Saturday, May 17, with a doubleheader beginning at noon and conclude on Sunday, May 18, with a single game also starting at noon. Sunday, will also be Andy Baylock Day, which will include the introduction of seniors and a special ceremony to honor Baylock’s 24 seasons as head coach of UConn baseball. Baylock announced his retirement on Friday, May 9, but will remain with the university as the Director of Alumni and Community Affairs for the Husky football program.
Baylock has guided the Huskies to 401 wins in the past 16 years – an average of 25 wins per season during that span. Baylock has posted a 554-491-8 record during his 24 seasons in charge of the UConn baseball program. He led UConn to BIG EAST Conference tournament championships in 1990 and ’94 and to NCAA tournament appearances in 1990, ’93 and ’94. When Baylock’s assistant coaching tenure is taken into account, he has been part of an overall UConn record of 820-613-11 during the past 38 seasons. The New Britain, Conn., native has personally coached 1,488 of the 2,324 games (64.0%) that have ever been played involving the University of Connecticut baseball program.
His association with UConn began in 1963 as the freshman baseball coach, a part-time position, and joined the Husky staff on a full-time basis a year later as an assistant football and baseball coach – positions which he held for 15 seasons. Baylock was part of Husky football teams that won or shared the Yankee Conference title four times. He also had a long tenure as the UConn freshman football coach. Baylock was an assistant baseball coach through the ’79 season and assumed the head coaching reigns in 1980.
