NOTRE DAME, IN - (April 27) The University of Connecticut baseball team dropped the final game of the three game series 6-3 to Notre Dame at Eck Stadium in Notre Dame, IN on Sunday, afternoon. The loss moves the Huskies under .500 on the season at 19-20 and 7-12 in the conference, while Notre Dame improves to 34-9 overall and 13-2 in the BIG EAST.
Notre Dame opened the scoring in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly by Matt Edwards for a 1-0 lead. The Irish would increase their lead with two runs in both the third and fourth innings. In the third Notre Dame scored on an RBI double by Edwards and a RBI by Kris Billmaier and in the fourth on a RBI double by Matt Bransfield and a RBI single by Greg Lopez.
The Huskies would cut into the lead with three runs in the fifth. Tony Mallozzi (Westboro, MA) started the scoring with a two run double to bring home Russ D’Argento (Marlboro, MA) and Marc Peluso (Pawcatuck, CT), followed by an RBI single from Peter Soteropoulos (Peabody, MA) to bring in Mallozzi. Notre Dame would add one insurance run in the seventh when Greg Lopez scored on a wild pitch for the 6-3 final.
Chris Niesel gets the win for the Irish going seven innings allowing three runs on six hits and striking out seven. Soteropoulos gets the loss for UConn and pitching well in relief for the Huskies was Erik Drown (Ipswich, MA) who pitched four innings allowed one run on only two hits.
UConn will return to action on Tuesday, April 29, when they travel to play instate rival Hartford. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
