STORRS, CT - (April 19) The University of Connecticut dropped both games of a double header to Virginia Tech 6-1 and 7-3, Saturday afternoon at J.O. Christian Field. The Huskies fall to 18-17 on the season and 7-9 in the BIG EAST, while the Hokies improve to 26-11 overall and 10-4 in the conference.
Game one saw Virginia Tech score the first six runs of the game. In the first the Hokies got an RBI single by Wyatt Toregas to take a 1-0 lead. Virginia Tech added two in the second on a two run single by Chris Winterfeldt. In the third the Hokies scored two more runs this time on a two run single by Matt Kalish to take a 5-0 lead. Virginia Tech would score one more in the fifth on Winterfeldt’s second RBI single. The Huskies lone run came courtesy of a Dan Trubia (Tolland, CT) solo home run to left field, as Virginia Tech took game one 6-1.
Ryan Kennedy was outstanding in picking up the win for Virginia Tech. Kennedy pitched 6.1 innings, allowing one run on seven hits and striking out three. Matt Dalton pitched a perfect 0.2 to pick up his 12th save of the season. Erik Drown (Ipswich, MA) picks up the loss for the Huskies.
Virginia Tech started game two in similar fashion, as they scored the first six runs again. The scoring started in the first on RBI singles by Marc Tugwell and Spencer Harris. The Hokies would add two more in the third on a sacrifice fly by Harris and on a wild pitch by Keith Potvin (Manchester, NH) for a 4-0 lead. Virginia Tech was not done though adding two runs in the fourth on an RBI single by Tugwell and a UConn throwing error to take a commanding 6-0 lead.
The Huskies would rally though scoring a single run in the fifth on an RBI by Brett Burnham (South Windsor, CT) to score Russ D’Argento (Marlboro, MA). UConn would cut the lead to 6-3 in the eighth on a two run home run by Mike McDonough (Abbington, MA) to score Burnham. Virginia Tech would add an insurance run in the ninth on RBI single by Brad Bauder for the 7-3 final.
Jeff Landing pitched 6.0 innings, while allowing one run on nine hits to pick up the win for the Hokies. Potvin picks up the loss for the Huskies, but Joe Smeraglino (Shelton, CT) pitched well for UConn in relief going 6.0 innings, allowing two runs, one earned on seven hits and striking out eight.
The Huskies return to action on Tuesday, April 22, as they play host to Fairfield. First pitch at J.O. Christian Field is set for 3:30 p.m.
