Huskies End Regular Season With a Loss to Sacred Heart

STORRS, CT (March 8) – The University of Connecticut men’s ice hockey team dropped its last regular season home game to Sacred Heart, 4-2, on Saturday night at the UConn Ice Arena before a season-high crowd of 1,305.
UConn got out to a quick jump at the 4:02 mark of the first period. Ron D’Angelo (Massapequa, NY) passed the puck in towards the net, and Kurt Kamienski (Pittsfield, MA) tipped the puck over to Tim Olsen (Vadnais Heights, MN), who fired the puck to the opposite side in between the goal post and Sacred Heart goalie Eddy Ferhi’s leg. The Pioneers evened the score 22-seconds later on a shot from Michael Forsland, who was positioned from in front of the net. Sacred Heart took the lead at 7:31 of the period, when Rocco Molinaro scored on assists from Lloyd Tennant and Martin Paquet. The Huskies then tied the score with 4:20 left in the period. Patrick Donlan (Norwell, MA) scored his first career goal. He scored on a rebounded shot from Rob Herting (Alamo, CA), who notched his first career assist. Beau McLaughin (Virginia Beach, VA) also was credited with an assist.
At a scoreless lock for most of the second period, Bernie Chmiel scored on a power play with 4:16 left. He took a slap shot from the backside of the face-off circle, allowing the puck to get by a screened Artie Imbriano (Stoneham, MA). Mike Reagan and Molinaro assisted on the goal. Sacred Heart added an insurance goal by Martin Paquet at the midpoint of the third period (8:48). Marc-Andre Fournier capped the night off with one minute left in the game to finish the game, 5-2 in favor of the Pioneers.
Imbriano had 24 saves in net, while Ferhi stopped 36shots on goal. Connecticut outshot Sacred Heart, 38-29, despite the loss
The Huskies completed their season with a record of 8-23-3 overall, 7-16-3 in the MAAC.
