STORRS, CT (Dec. 5) - University of Connecticut volleyball coach Kelli Myers has announced the signing of three recruits for the 2004 season. Nicole Boyd (Arlington, TX), Sade Chambers (Baldwinsville, NY) and Brittany Stewart (Dolton, IL) will all join the Huskies next year.
Boyd, a 5-10 setter who plays for Martin High School and the Texas Advantage club team, is predicted by Myers to be "a great addition to our setting game. She is a very good athlete who works extremely hard and has the attitude necessary to run a team. Her attitude is great for a setter and I think she will be a very demanding leader in this position."
Boyd has nearly eight years of club experience, which have all been on national travel teams, and she has twice been to the Junior Olympics. In 2002, Boyd earned the Coaches’ Award on her Skyline Juniors team. At Martin she was named to the All-District second team this past season, and has earned two varsity letters on a team which was ranked 13th in the nation prior to the 2003 season. Also strong academically, Boyd is an active member of the National Honor Society and has twice been nominated for America’s Who’s Who Among High School Students.
Chambers, a 6-2 middle hitter who plays for the Baldwinsville Blast as well as Baldwinsville High School, is said by Myers to be "a very physical and powerful athlete. Her size and athleticism will be a significant addition to our middle game, and I expect her to be a solid defensive player for us. She will develop more as she trains at this level, and I am excited to start working with her next year."
Chambers is a three-sport varsity athlete at Baldwinsville, playing tennis and lacrosse as well as volleyball. As a sophomore and junior, Chambers helped lead the volleyball team to regional, sectional and league championships, and was named to the All-League first team both years. The team was a silver medalist at the Empire State Games in 2002 and 2003, and Chambers was named All-State fifth team in 2002. Chambers is currently the team captain of this year’s squad, which plays in the winter season. She is also accomplished in tennis, having been twice named to the All-League first team, and named both captain and MVP as a senior. Academically, Chambers is a three-time scholar athlete and currently serves as the Student Council President.
Stewart, a 5-10 outside hitter who plays for Marian Catholic High School as well as for the 2nd City and Alliance VBC clubs, respectively, is referred to by Myers as a "solid, all around player who we are just thrilled to have joining the program. She is an exceptional athlete who will be a great addition to the left side for us. She has a great deal of experience that will help her make the transition to the collegiate game."
Stewart was a four-year varsity starter at Marian Catholic, and as one of the school’s all-time leaders in kills, she helped spark Marian to four IHSA Regional titles in her career as well as to the Class AA Elite Eight in her junior year. Stewart is a three-time All-Conference and All-Area selection, and has twice been selected as Player of the Year. Following her senior campaign this year, Stewart was named All-State. As a member of the 2nd City club team, Stewart helped lead her team to a 14 Open Silver Medal finish at the Junior Nationals.
